Presentations in Atlanta and Finland

Later this week, I will be presenting at the Southern Interactive Entertainment and Game Exposition better known as SIEGE.

Here is a description of my presentation:
Why 3D Matters for Learning and Collaboration?

Do 3D graphics and interactions really make a difference in how a learner interacts with content or other learners? Is a 2D environment as effective for serious games as a 3D environment? Studies are beginning to reveal the elements that make 3d characters more engaging and intriguing to learners. Additionally, research has indicated that the interactions learners have with 3D characters have an impact on learners behavior both within the 3D environment and for some time after the learner leaves that 3D environment. It turns out that 3D does make a difference in terms of learning, motivation and impact on behavior. This session will discuss research that supports the argument that 3D learning environments add additional cues and inputs that make them ideal for teaching certain types of content.

It promises to be an interesting conference with lots of good information on "serious games" and game design and development in general. I hope to come home with some great ideas from the game developers for elearning and instructional games.

Also, later this month, I am travelling to Finland to speak at the Learning in Different Worlds Conference, October 7-8, Lahti, Finland. Along with Ken Hudson, I am a keynote speaker at the event.

I will be speaking on the topic of Learning in 3D: How Immersive Virtual Environments are being leveraged to add value to enterprise learning and collaboration

I am looking forward to the trip and will be sending back reports as the conference unfolds. I have a great dinner planned with some of the other presenters and will be taking notes as the topic of virtual worlds is explored at an international level.

Interviewed at Udemy

The other day, I was interviewed by the folks over at udemy. They asked questions about 3D, the origin of Kapp Notes and the future of education.

The question about the origin of Kapp Notes is interesting as I am planning on moving the blog to a new location with new layout with additional content and some support to make all this happen.

In terms of 3D, one question was: How can 3D technology be used to impact education?

I responded that it will impact education in 3 ways:
  • It can provide learners with experiences they could not have any other way.
  • 3D fosters collaboration across great distances.
  • 3D is the natural state of humans and when 3D interfaces become easier to use and mimic our natural movements, the possibilities of collaborating, learning and gaining wisdom will be almost limitless.

Hanging Out In Chicago with Allison and Tony

Earlier this week, I had a chance to hang out with Allison Rossett and my co-author Tony. I've worked with Allison before for an ASTD event about Rapid eLearning. I always enjoy hanging out with her and gaining insight from her ideas and perspectives on learning.

Karl Kapp, Allison Rossett and Tony O'Driscoll talking about learning.

We were all in Chicago for the Corporate University Technology Assisted Learning Conference. Allison gave a workshop on blended learning and provided great insights into different forms of blended learning and discussed the pros and cons of those options. The particpants were wonderful and shared stories of successful blended learning and some unsuccessful attempts. I really enjoyed meeting everyone.

Tony and I conducted a workshop about Learning in 3D. We discussed the Seven Sensibilities and the 3D Learning Archetypes as well as a demonstration of some virtual worlds and a lots of examples of practical implementations.

Here are some of the slides we used in the presentation (Similar to our ASTD presentation which can be seen here. Slides are below.)

RWD Speaks about Using 3D Virtual Environments for Learning and Collaboration

At the ASTD Conference, I had the privilege of interviewing a couple of folks who are pioneering the use of 3D virtual environments across the enterprise. As indicated in this blog earlier in the week, RWD has entered into a partnership with ProtonMedia to make ProtoSphere available to its clients.

I was lucky enough to be at the conference and two interview people from RWD and ask them about the partnership.I spoke with Mal Poulin, Enterprise Market Director for RWD, and Paul Bejgrowicz, Principal Performance Consultant for RWD

We conducted the interview in the thick of the conference so its is a little loud but interesting information from RWD's perspective in terms of them trying to bring 3D virtual enterprise solutions into the market place.
Mal Poulin, Paul Bejgrowicz and Karl Kapp discuss the use of 3D virtual
world ProtoSphere and it potential impact on the learning and collaboration space.

Here is the full interview and, pay close attention to the last question, they are reading some interesting stuff:)

Interview with CEO of ProtonMedia and President of Kaplan-EduNeering on 3D in Compliance Training and Collaboration

The other week, I had the privilege of being able to interview two very interesting people about the future of 3D Virtual worlds for collaboration and training in the compliance space. It was an exciting interview with some really interesting answers to my questions.

Here is a link to the interview of ProtonMedia's blog: What the ProtonMedia-Kaplan EduNeering partnership means for life sciences companies

Ron Burns, CEO of Proton Media, Lisa Clune, President of Kaplan EduNeering
and Karl Kapp (just some guy).

PS: Look for an awesome question near the end related to some intense reading Lisa and Ron have been doing:)

Summits, Conferences and Some Relaxation

It has been a busy few weeks and May continues to be busy as I have a couple of presentations with my co-author Tony O'Driscoll coming up. We are co-presenting at the ASTD 2010 International Conference & Exposition May 18, 1:00-3:30 in Chicago, Illinois on the topic of "Learning in 3D" we are looking forward to the presentation

We are then doing a workshop together at the Corporate University Technology Assisted Learning Conference on May 24th called "Learning in 3D: Adding a New Dimension to Enterprise Learning and Collaboration"

Meridian Know and Learn Conference

A few weeks ago, I had the privilege of working with the great folks at Meridian on a panel discussing learning trends. I was on a panel with Mark Bower and Susan Smith Nash. It was a lot of fun discussion whether or not we thought a trend was "fact" or "fiction."

Here are some photographs from the panel discussion.
Mark, Karl and Susan prepare for audience questions.
We considered switching seats to have some fun with the audience:)

Susan makes a point to Karl and Mark about Social Media.

Kaplan-EduNeering Knowledge Summit

Last week I attended the Kaplan-EduNeering Knowledge Summit and once again had a great time. It was the Seventh Annual Summit and I believe I have attended all seven. And speaking of "seven." I had the opportunity to meet Jeffrey Hollender the executive Chairman and Chief Inspired Protagonist of the Seventh Generation Corporation which is a company that is committed to creating authentic, safe, and environmentally-responsible products for a healthy home.

I also had a chance to have a few moments with the fascinating, interesting and highly educated Bror Saxberg, the Chief Learning Officer of Kaplan, Inc. His vision for the future of education is exciting, interesting and will be scary for traditional institutions. The data that Kaplan will be able to collect in the near future concerning student performance, learning methods and strategies and the delivery of content to life-long learners is staggering. It will be an exciting and unsettling time in higher education in the next 5-10 years when Bror begins to mine the data and opportunities within Kaplan.

Bror Saxberg discussing the application of research
to learning design to an enthralled audience.

And, at the Knowledge Summit, Kaplan-EduNeering and ProtonMedia announced a strategic partnership.

As the press release indicates:
Kaplan EduNeering, a leading provider of compliance and knowledge management technology solutions, and ProtonMedia, the developer of the ProtoSphere virtual collaboration environment for the high-performance workplace, today announced a new multi-year partnership. The companies will develop and offer a uniquely comprehensive suite of tools for compliance training, product life cycle management (PLM), and collaborative decision-making for life sciences organizations.

Kaplan EduNeering’s online compliance solutions are used by over one million individuals in more than 50 countries by companies in regulated industries, including cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, biologics, dietary supplements, and medical devices.

ProtoSphere is the market-leading virtual collaboration environment for the high-performance workplace, and the #1 virtual environment for collaborative product life cycle management (PLM) in life sciences. ProtoSphere’s virtual environment provides an arsenal of business-focused collaboration and communication tools that help companies accelerate decision-making and raise productivity, improving workplace performance overall.

Together, Kaplan EduNeering and ProtonMedia will create a best-of-breed 3-D virtual collaboration environment, driven by the powerful compliance tracking engine of the Kaplan EduNeering Platform. Kaplan EduNeering’s expertise in delivering solutions that help companies meet regulatory and compliance requirements will augment ProtonMedia’s ability to effectively foster product life cycle collaboration within research, development, production, marketing, and customer engagement phases.
But it wasn't all work, we had a nice dinner at the Adventure Camden Aquarium.

Having a compliance discussion with
Dave Peterson and Gilly, the aquarium mascot.

Having fish dinner among the sharks.

Meridian Conference: Lots of Fun, Catching up with Virtual Friends

Left to right are Bill Perry, Managing Parter of Meridian,
Karl Kapp, Susan Smith Nash of the E-Learning Queen blog, and
Mark Bower of the Learning Leaders Forum blog and Edge Interactive.

Yesterday, had a great panel discussion at the Meridian Learn and Know Conference. I was able to catch up with Alumni John Leh, saw Sean McCarthy (who has an awesome green shirt) and Roy Haythorn (he and I go "way back") and met Jonna Ward (who I have not exchanged emails with) and caught up with a few of people I've met only in Twitter.

Twitter folks were namely LearnNuggets aka Kevin Thorn who told me of some interesting game projects he's worked on (he even had a chance to do a 2 week, heads down game development project leaving the conference room only for coffee--now that's awesome. I also met briefly pamelacdevine (Pam Devine) who blogs at Business Learning Blog and spoke for a while with tomhood (Tom Hood) who is helping CPA's enter into the world of Second Life...check out CPA Island.

Bill Perry discussing topics with the
audience for the upcoming panel discussion.

The panel on which I served did a fun little exercise, we were given topics and got to decide if they were fact or fad. We discussed current topics like augmented reality (Click here to see BMW's use of virtual googles--you'll need to click on the video in the right hand corner).

We discussed virtual worlds--which I said was fact!

We discussed mobile learning--which I said was a fad because I don't think talking an entire course and squeezing it down to the iPhone for viewing is a good idea. Instead, I think the focus should be mobile performance support. Gathering information you need to do your job but not learning in course format.

We discussed some other great and "dangerous" topics as well. A little later the video of the panel discussion will be posted and you can check it out yourself.

Good fun working with Susan Smith Nash who blogs at E-Learning Queen and Mark Bower who blogs at Learning Leaders Forum. It was so much fun we make take the "show on the road!"

Great meeting everyone!!

Positive Birthday Vibes:)

Thanks to everyone who emailed or stopped by my Facebook page for a birthday well wishing, much appreciated!!!

I think a positive outlook on a Birthday can bring forward some good vides no matter how old a person is in terms of years on Earth.

I had some really good things happen in the last couple days that I think were, in part, due to my positive Birthday vibe and thought I'd share a couple (plus when I have an off day, I'll bookmark this post for a positive energy boost.)

ASTD's April T&D Magazine published an article I wrote with Tony O'Driscoll called "Designing Virtual Immersive Environments"

The article is based on the book Learning in 3D
and outlines some considerations for learning in 3D and ways to think about the exciting new environment for learning and collaboration.

A colleague of mine got an email with this nice message about a course I conducted called "Avoiding Death by PowerPoint"
As a side note, let me share that people at our office were so pleased with the Advanced PP training that Dr Kapp gave us last week! Across the board, people commented positively on his pedagogical approach, his kindness, the hands-on nature of the training. It totally revolutionized how many of our staff do PowerPoint. So thank him again on our behalf.

I also recently received an email that said...
I was in the audience for your presentation. Yours was THE Best Technical presentation I've ever attended - bar none. It was informative, fast moving, easy to understand, timely and most of all - RELEVANT. How did you do that? (I'm smiling)

My post I have Seen the Future of Conferences and It's 3D was listed as number 6 in eLearning Learning's 35 Top eLearning Articles for March and Creating Assessment Questions that Measure Performance was listed as number 20.

The Learning in 3D Facebook page has been categorized as a "Community Page." With over 386 fans.

SlideShare let me know that for a brief moment in time, one of my slide shows was "hot on Twitter." (third one on the right in the top row.)

And sifowler tweeted about buying Learning in 3D! THANKS and thanks to Jane Bozarth...for her positive birthday wish!

Two old friends took the time to drop me a personnel email messages! It was good to catch up with them even though it was only virtually.

And, today, my post at Tech Dimension generated an email that said just two words: Great Stuff!

And, the icing on the cake, as of right now, Amazon.com is OUT OF STOCK on Learning in 3D
...they literally sold out on my birthday! Awesome all of Amazon's stock of Learning in 3D was purchased...but more is on the way. Aaah, nice way to end a Birthday.

Appearing "Live and in Person" on EdTechTalk Friday--Today

Today at Noon Eastern Standard Time (EST), I will be chatting with Cammy Bean and Robert Squires about Instructional Design at EdTechTalk.

EdTechTalk is a community of educators interested in discussing and learning about the uses of educational technology. The group webcasts several live shows each week. During shows, listeners can use any common media player (i.e. Windows Media Player, Real Player, or iTunes) to listen to the discussion and use the chat room to make comments and ask questions.

Specifically, I will be on the Instructional Design Live show.

Instructional Design Live is an opportunity for instructional designers and professionals engaged in similar work to discuss effective online teaching and learning practices. Each week features guest interviews and participant question and answer sessions. I have to say that I am humbled to be on the show as last week's guest was Charles Reigeluth from Indiana University who's books I studied in graduate school and still reference when teaching and consulting.

In my session, we'll be discussing:

  • The differences in how ID is practiced in academia vs. corporate. Are there different competencies and skills being practiced in these realms?
  • Thinking about ID in the future...what skills will someone need? what will ID look like?

For more details and to join in the live session, go to EdTechTalk Instructional Design live web page click on Participate Live and go from there! Hope to "see you there."

Discussion with Chip Ramsey, CEO of Intellum

Recently, I sat down with Chip Ramsey the CEO of Intellum, a company soon to be a house-hold name in the e-learning space,  and discussed with him a wide range of topics. You can listen to our discussion at the Intellum Interview web page.

I have spoken about Intellum before in my post How Much for that E-Learning in the Window.

Chip and I discussed everything from how I got started in the e-learning industry, including how I got my first job because of "Whilly Whistle" and some news and information about the upcoming Learning in 3D: Adding a New Dimension to Enterprise Learning and Collaboration book I've penned with Tony O'Driscoll.

Check out the interview, you can listen directly from within the web page and/or download podcast via iTunes. Here is the interview which will be the first of many with different people in the e-learning and learning space. It was great fun talking with Chip and reminiscing about the early days of e-learning.

Have a listen to our conversation, I think you'll enjoy it--I certainly had fun.

Washington DC Keynote Notes

Recently I was in the DC area doing a keynote and wanted to include some notes and the slides from the presentation and ask those who attended to stop by this blog and make a comment and answer the questions at the end of the post (others can answer also...not trying to exclude anyone)

Here are the slides from the presentation:

Here is a blog entry about "Learning as a process"

In discussing learning as a process, I mentioned the 8:45 Club. Here is the link.

Also, here are some statistics about Web 2.0 and Social Media in a post called Random Web 2.0 Statistics.

And here are some ideas for selling social media for learning.

Here is a link to an online presentation about "thinking visually" called Avoiding Death by PowerPoint. For more ideas on thinking visually, check out this post by Zaid called The Very Best from ZaidLearn which has a great visual presentation.

Here is a link to a number of presentation-focused presentation resources (if that makes sense)

Here is a link for using Games, Gadgets and Gizmos for Learning with examples of some interesting game.

Here is a link to the Facebook page of Learning in 3D.

Here is a link to a post describing how many different organizations are using Wikis to foster collaboration and learning called Pedia Palooza (ok, maybe not the best name for a post)

Miscellaneous Items:

Ingredients of a Big Mac
Sprint Now Network Commercial with Flava Flav

Questions:

What is one thing you can do to become a facilitator of learning?

What is one technique you can borrow from another industry to add to your training toolkit?

Name one thing you will do differently as a result of this conference?

Jump In-Action Items:

So here is a little homework.

1) Comment on a blog.
2) Send a Tweet.
3) Dis-assemble your favorite training course and think of breaking into small 15 minute chunks
4) Start your class with the culminating activity.
5) Consult with a student or someone who wants training, ask 5 questions before giving any answers.

Co-Author Speaking at 3D Life Science 2010 Event in Malvern, PA

On January 19th, 2010. Tony O'Driscoll (my co-author and partner in 3D) will be presenting at an event co-sponsored by Microsoft and ProtonMedia.

The event will be moderated by a top life sciences industry personality, and will feature several surprise guests, the panel will discuss how pharma organizations are using innovative (some would say radical) collaboration technologies to out-think and out-sell their competitors in today's exceedingly competitive environment. They are even going to serve lunch and refreshments. At the event, you will see case studies and hear about experiences people have had using innovative 3D technologies. You’ll also get an exclusive sneak peek at imaginative new “stuff” that could fundamentally change how Life Sciences teams work together online.

It is an "invitation-only" event. However, if you let them know you saw my blog post on the topic...you'll receive an invite. Check out the event at the Life Sciences 2010: The Global Collaboration Imperative.

On Tuesday January 19, 2010 as part of the eLearning Guild's Thought Leader Series I will be co-presenting with Tony O'Driscoll in a webinar titled Learning in 3D: Adding a New Dimension to Enterprise Learning and Collaboration at 10:30 AM PST.

Here is a description of the webinar:

Virtual Immersive Environments (VIEs) are gaining attention but are they effective or a fad? Unfortunately, there are few guidelines to inform the development and creation of effective 3D Learning Events. In this session, we will examine a model for effectively thinking about and deploying 3D learning and collaboration spaces within your organization, explore how different design principles and learning archetypes lead to success and analyze case studies of organizations that have successfully combined formal and informal learning within these virtual spaces. This session provides educators, corporate trainers and others with valuable information on how 3D worlds foster and promote informal and formal learning and collaboration within and across organizations
This presentation is based on the publication of the new book "Learning in 3D" due out in January 2010.

You must be a member of the Guild to register, but, if you are not a member, you should become one. Here is the information you need to register.

Also,I will be appearing "in person" at the MPICT Winter Conference where I will be presenting a keynote address titled Leveraging Virtual Worlds, Web 2.0 and Smartphones for Educational Excellence.

I will also be appearing "in person" at ASTD TechKnowledge in Las Vegas on Friday, January 29th from Friday, 10:00AM-11:30AM

Please if you attend one of these events, stop by and say "hi" virtually or even in person if it is a live event. I love to meet people and say hello.
