Here is a story titled Congress Goes Virtual in Online World Hearing that explains how a sub-committee in congress got together to experience a virtual world.
According to the article:
The Subcommittee on Telecommunications and the Internet wanted to know some basics. Could Second Life be used as a place to launder money? Are children safe in online worlds? Are there churches in there? Are you making any money?I think they are digging deeper than just the basics but it is a great start. At least they are trying to understand what they are eventually going to regulate (of course they are going to regulate it...just a matter of time.)
