Today's Stop: Brent Schlenker's Corporate Elearning Development

Today, you can check out the second interview I've had with Brent over at Corporate ELearning Strategies and Development. The posting is GGG 4 Lrng - Gamers lower the Boom! it includes both an audio broadcast of the interview featuring a discussion with Brent, myself and Cammy Bean from Learning Visions...it was a great discussion.

And, as an additional bonus...Brent also features a little "rant" about the boomers...apparently he is not very happy with this particular demographic group, in fact, I think he is a little upset with ya'all. (for another recent rant discussion, see He Had a Bad Day : eLearning Technology)

Me, in terms of boomers, I can see his point but, I'm a little more live and let live and more concerned with getting the knowledge from many of the boomers to the gamers (at least some of that knowledge...some of the more critical knowledge) but that is the beauty of a blog book tour, you get to hear many opinions and not just mine.

Also, check out an interview I did with two other blog book stops, fellow academics Mike Qaissaunne at Frequently Asked Q and Gordon Synder at his ICT Blog team interviewed me a while back about the book, you can listen to the interview called 10 Questions with Karl Kapp.

Have a great weekend and if you feel compelled, please drop a comment on some of the blog stops.

Blog Book Tour: Week Two Happenings

If you haven't seen the postings on the blog book tour for this week, you need to check them out.

Day Six: 09/17/07 - Enspire Learning's Corporate Blog This entry was great because it provided an opportunity to play a simulation. I hope you took advantage of that offer.

Day Seven: 09/18/07 -Mark Oehlert's e-clippings(Learning as Art). Mark's stop was week 2, stop 2 a high pressure stop. Mark gave some insights into his review of the book before it was even published. He provided over 18 pages of comments that really fueled alot of the ideas and insights into the book. Thanks Mark.

Day Eight: 09/19/07 - Mike Qaissaunee's Frequently Asked Q writes a post These Kids are Wired Differently. Mike tells a great story about his daughter and then gives a fantatic list of free games and game resources which would make Jane Bozarth proud.

Day Nine: 09/20/07 - Jane Bozarath's Bozarathzone...Speaking of Jane, she writes an entry Its GGG...REAT Karl Kapp's Book Tour Week Two. She likes the idea of championing the gamers who are sometimes looked down upon by the "boomers." Jane should be going on a book tour soon, she has a couple of books in the works herself.

In addition to the list above, we've had some awesome additions to the tour as well. Stop by and leave a comment. I especially find Jeff Cobb's interesting since he dove into the marketing aspect of the blog book tour itself. Interesting perspective and insights.Stop by one of the stops and join the discussion.

Blog Book Tour: Week One Recap

Talk about a fun week with plenty of activities and discussions about gamers, cheat codes, teaching the new generation of learners and labels.

Week One kicked off strongly with A podcast interview with Brent Schlenker. He and I discussed the book, the boomer/gamer knowledge gap and the blog book tour. Have a listen.

Then on day two Tom King over at Mobilemind posted a great piece which provide a quick, high level view of the book and then provided a great strategy for reading the book if you only have a little bit of time (ok, ok it did get long) Check out his laugh-out-loud post...Cheat This Book-Gadgets, Games and Gizmos.

Next Cammy's Bean at Learning Visions started with a single post Gadgets, Games and Gizmos for Learning. It is long, thorough and totally complete. Great summary of the entire book...maybe she works for Cliff Notes?

But then she didn't stop...she added another post...Women, Gaming & The Guild Master Ceiling. A great post about the perception of women and gaming, she and I have had "words" before on this topic and it sparked a great discussion. (See The Real World, Second Life and Facebook/MySpace ...read the comments to see our points of disagreement).

But she still didn't stop. She has now posted a poll...Are you a gamer?...go answer the poll and leave a comment about your answer. Once again, a good conversation was sparked. Join in at Are You a Gamer?

Then Rupa from Writer's Gateway created a post called Gadgets, Games and Gizmos for Learning-My Thoughts on Chapter 1. She provides a great perspective and indicates that learning is successful only when the learner is engaged...I agree.

Tony O’ Driscoll who recently changed jobs, had taken a little break from the blogosphere but came back to be a stop on the tour and now he is back for good under the same banner but not longer with IBM catch up with what Tony is doing at Learning Matters. Also, check out his stop on the tour Blog Book Tour Stop: Gadgets, Games and Gizmos talks about how kids provide great insight into new learning technologies and techniques. His kids are younger than mine but watch out Tony. Soon they will out "gadget, game and gizmo" you.

The week ended with Phil Charron from Learning Simulations leaving two posts (trying to keep up with Cammy.) First is GGG4L-Blog Book Tour I. (he coined GGG4L as a shortcut, wish I'd thought of it...brilliant.) His second tour stop is, simple enough, GGG4L-Blog Book Tour II.

Also, an honorable mention to Christy Tucker from Experiencing E-Learning who left comments at several of the blog tour stops...look for her stop coming up!

So, take a moment and recap the fun and exciting tour, we had a great time and hope you'll join us for the discussion next week and the week after. You can see the tour next week at the following locations:

Second Life at the Movies

It was bound to happen, a full-feature length movie in Second Life...oops, sorry, it hasn't happened yet...but you heard it here first.

Click here for the SLURL if you want to check out Hollywood, Second Life.(you need to have a Second Life avatar to visit.)

However, what has happened is that HBO has acquired the rights to a short-form documentary shot entirely within Second Life. It will be interesting to see where Second Life goes from here in terms of movies. We are familiar with machinimia but a full-length movie...it will be interesting.

Here is a quote from the article HBO Buys Film Made in Second Life.
HBO, the premium channel owned by Time Warner, paid a six-figure sum for the rights...the documentary is scheduled for release in 2008. [Also CBS]...will feature footage shot within Second Life in an upcoming episode of its popular show CSI.
Lot going on with machinimia made into main stream movies. Also, I recently discussed using Second Life for training with three large Fortune 100 companies. The hype has died down but serious interest still exists for the medium.

Also, in Second Life News...

Jeff Cobb posted an interesting link about Second Life with a lot of good links to other information about Second Life. He also lays out some interesting pros and cons in his posting Second Life Second Hand.

Might it not be possible to create a full length training video in Second Life or a safety video without paying actors, setting up lighting or worrying about buying/renting costumes?

==============================================================================
You can find way more than just movies online considering the ridiculously wide variety of stuff there is online, such as free online gaming available to anyone. Whether you want to find reviews on textbooks or you just really want to play a game just keep trying and you'll find what you want.

Web 2.0 Lessons Learned

Here are some lessons that I've learned concerning the building of a Web 2.0 community around wikis and blogs. My learning occured as I taught my class "Learning in 3D" this summer.

1. Don't Start with a Blank Slate
For the course, I created a structure within a wiki that included pages that were clearly marked for certain categories of content (links, basics, etc). The idea is to give the learners a place to input information, links and ideas within a pre-existing structure. Categories (aka web pages) give the learners structure and helps them overcome the "bank-page syndrome." I found students much more willing to contribute to the wiki when they had specific places to "put" things. For the blog, I would sometimes ask three questions I wanted students to answer on the blog. This gave them a start on their postings.

2. Seek Out Contributors Early
I had a number of students who wanted to work early on some of the projects so I gladly encouraged them and asked them to post their work on the wiki as soon as they had completed it even though the assignments were not due for another 4 weeks. This started off the contribution process and allowed others to see examples of what type of content was expected for the wiki. For the blog, I asked students to post their reactions to my posting to encourage dialogue.

3. Post Examples
This goes hand-in-hand with the recommendation above. Seek out examples of what is appropriate and standard for your wiki and then post it. This provides other potential contributors with guidance and examples to help them know what to post.

4. Remind Learners to Contribute
I was constantly sending emails, making announcements in our virtual classroom and responding to emails with "why don't you post this on the wiki."

5. Guidance Doesn't Mean Strict Rules
While I gave examples and asked questions to spark engagement, I did not reprimand or scold anyone who was seemingly off-target. I am sure that it is necessary at times but for the most part, the tangents were related to the main topic and added rich new information and insights to the discussions. I didn't want to restrict "free association" or "stream of conscious" postings.

6. Don't Expect Everyone to "Get Into It"
Some people are not happy contributing to the Web 2.0 community that has been created, they like to lurk or they don't want to be too involved. You can't force involvement in a community...so don't try. You can give gentle reminders but forcing participation is not good for the community or for the person forced to contribute. On the same token, you are going to have a few people who are "way" into contributing. Let them add to the community and, you will notice, others will play off of their entries. They will become leaders of certain aspects of the community...this is a good thing. A community should not be led by one person, it should be led by many.

7. Utilize the Insights of Others
Several people not in my original class this summer contributed wonderful ideas and insights into the content. Encourage people not "officially" in a group to comment. Let sales folks comment on your R&D blog. You might not get a lot of outside posts but when you do get an "outside" post, it will certainly add value and may take you down a path previously not considered.

8. Celebrate the Growth of the Community
A couple of times on this blog, I noted the achievements of the students who created the machinimia projects and posted them on YouTube and TeacherTube, that, in turn, gave those machinimia project even more visibility and views. If you have content that is especially worthy of recognition, make sure you promote it and make it visible so others can benefit.

9. Mix Experienced and Inexperienced Learners
In the wiki we developed for class, alumni were asked to provide input as well as the students currently enrolled in the class. This allowed the students to ask questions that really made the alumni think and allowed the alumni to share their knowledge with the students. It was a great transfer of knowledge between groups. Exposing experienced people to inexperienced people forces them to think through fundamentals and knowledge they sometimes take for granted.

Well, that is my short list of Web 2.0 Lessons learned...please take a moment to add your own lessons or idea about building and maintaining a Web 2.0 community.

===========================================================
Going to an online university in order to get yourself your degree is a choice some people make so they can get an online MBA around their own schedule. As more and more colleges off online degree programs the choice of online college degrees increases every year.
