I like the image of those "star-burst" callouts, each identifying what would otherwise be a bullet item.
I like to use tables or some sort of matrix as well to break up the bullet-after-bullet effect: that hypnotic effect of seeing the bullet items, but not really reading them.
We just need to keep in mind that the original idea of bullet lists - to present material in a chunked, easy-to-remember format - is important to continue.

Good point, we need to keep in mind the underlying instructional strategies that make learning effective.
Using "out-of-the-box" techniques for PowerPoint only work if you know the underlying reasons for using the basic technique in the first place.
Using tables and a matrix is a great idea as well.
